About Me
- Lily
- This is a journal of sorts for me, a mother of 2, a native San Franciscan and lover of chocolate. I cannot imagine life without chocolate, good food, my friends, and my family; all of which make up my Life as I know it.

Still MIA... but will try again.
Fall is upon us once again.
It's been a busy month with school starting, schedules amuck and the usual daily grind of work, school, kids and home. I did have a moment to savor a totally new dish last Friday while in San Francisco with my bro. He brought me to this little hole in the wall for some yummy noodles.
Zazang Korean Noodles
I ordered their #1 special, stir fried black bean sauce over fresh noodles. The dish hit the spot for me and satisfied my constant noodle cravings. It was good.
I also went crazy and baked up a storm Saturday morning. Between the supernatural brownies and the oatmeal raisin cookies, my oven stayed on all morning. It was a good day, and a good weekend overall.
Happy Monday, y'all!

Pasta Pomodoro from Bon Appetit

I just started a new subscription with Bon Appetit and in my first issue (May issue) they had a very simple recipe to make pasta pomodoro. So simple and the pictures just made my mouth water. So of course, I had to try it!
You can find the recipe here at Bon Appetit's site.
I used 3 roma tomatoes that I had sitting around and modified my ingredients slightly. And I had about 4 ounces of linguine leftover from the alfredo pasta I made for the kids.
It's nice to have something simple sometimes. I slurped this bowl of noodles right up. I added a little bit more than just a pinch of red pepper flakes so the sauce had a really nice kick to it. And it was delicious with a glass of 2008 Page Mill Winery Merlot!!! There's nothing better than pasta and wine!
Bon Appetit!!!

Missing In Action...

It's only been about 15 months since I last posted in December of 2009... Where did the time go?
Like most working moms it's been tough juggling a full-time job, two kids and a busy social life...NOT! And I've been distracted by other things like trashy romance novels on my 'new' Kindle for the last few months so something has to give, right?
While I haven't exactly been diligent about posting on my blog, I have been trying different recipes. My recent attempts have included:
Tiny Urban Kitchen's Red Bean Mochi Cake (nian gao)
Williams-Sonoma's posting of CUT Restaurant's Mac 'n' Cheese
and even a healthy food option, in my attempt to use my overstock of Bob's Red Mill Steel Cut Oats, some Oatmeal Muffins from Food.com which turned out dense and dry because I mistakenly substituted the oil for apple sauce in hopes of cutting back on the 'fat'. Big mistake! The muffins sit on my counter as I type this, unnoticed and neglected by my kids and my husband.
I haven't forgotten my other vice. My good friend recently chauffeured me to Livermore to pick up some wines. While we were there, we made the best decision ever by stopping at the First Street Alehouse for lunch. I have to say, that was the best lunch I've had in a long time because the moon, sun and earth were all aligned for us to enjoy a great Friday afternoon off from work in good spring-like weather in the company of evil fried seafood, yummy beer, and a great friend! Life doesn't get much better than that!
I'd like to promise that I will visit again soon with more updates on my cooking exploits, so hang tight friends! More news to come!

Special Ingredient.... Blueberry!!!!
Topped with cinnamon and sugar, the biscuit batter had "fluffed up" in the ten minutes I let it rest. I followed the recipe instructions and left some holes for the berries to bubble through.
The larger pie required a good twenty minutes more in my oven than the stated twenty five minutes in the recipe. But the topping came out slightly crispy on top and soft and fluffy inside. But like some of my past pie-making experiments, I had a little too much syrup-y juices on the bottom; like blueberry soup.
The second recipe was the Easy Batter Fruit Cobbler also from Allrecipes.com. I liked this recipe because it was really easy to make. Warm up the pie pan in the oven with the butter until melted, mix your batter up, pour it in, scatter the fruit on top and into the oven it goes!
This recipe baked up much more quickly. The edges were slightly crispy and when scooped, the cobbler was much more solid.
Here are the two cobblers next to each other.
So the next day, I brought my cobblers in to work and labeled them A and B respectively. And to my surprise, I had some people love A, others love B and still others chose both. It seemed people who grew up eating cobblers with ice cream loved A, which was the Very Best Blueberry Cobbler. Others who liked the taste of the fresh blueberries liked B, the Easy Batter Fruit Cobbler. Wednesday, June 17, 2009
Chipster Topped Brownies
But the chocolate melted after some patient stirring. I didn't want to overheat the chocolate.
I had read a few of the other blogs and found that some people baked the brownies for 15 minutes before adding the cookie dough topping. So after combining the melted chocolate and butter, in the pan it went and into the oven for its first 15 minutes while I made the cookie batter.
Da cookie dough. Looks a bit sticky and thick. I wasn't able to spread the batter at all onto my brownie mixture. So I dropped the batter by the spoonfuls over the top of the brownie hoping that the cookie dough will spread as it bakes.
Here's my pic honoring Alton Brown's oven shots from his Good Eats show. We're spreading, and puffing up too!

Belated Post from Mother's Day Baking Activities
After a few hours of false starts I decided to bake a batch of cookies. So Nick Malgieri's Peanut Chocolate Chip cookies from his Chocolate book was the first.
This was how they looked after each ball is flattened with the bottom of a glass.
The baking itch was still there so I thought, why not bake another batch. My husband could bring it to his friend's house later. So I started the Vanishing Oatmeal Raisin Cookies from Quaker Oats... and then moved onto the Cinnamon and Sugar butter cookie recipe from the Mrs. Fields Cookies cookbook because I realized that my son didn't like either of the first two cookies.
3 tablespoons Sugar
1 cup Salted butter -- softened, room temperature
But there's one more! Why not round it out with a batch of brownies??? So I cheated and baked up a batch from one of those that come out of a box. It was still good since I kicked it up a notch with some coffee powder.
As it turned out, my coworkers enjoyed the fruits of my labor the next day. And my husband built his Great Wall in our backyard.
